TDK demonstrates flexible and transparent OLED displays at CEATEC 2010.

Tuesday TDK showcased flexible and transparent OLED displays at the CEATEC 2010 convention currently taking place over in Japan. According to Osamu Onitsuka, senior manager of TDKs display division, the transparent version is already in mass production and the flexible version should enter production within the next year.

"We e using a film display, or film substrate, not glass and not metal," Onitsuka said in regards to the flexible display. "So its very light and we can curve it and also not break it." He also added that the OLED display would be ideal for smartphones and portable media devices--even wearable devices like bracelets--however he wouldn specify possible device partners.

Additional reports claim that TDK flexible displays sporting colors weigh around 1.11g whereas the monochrome displays were around 0.96g. Both models will come with a 256 x 64 pixel resolution on a 3.5-inch display measuring 0.3-mm thick. The screens can also be installed on curved surfaces with a radius of less than 25-mm.

As for the transparent display, TDK said that the panels can be read only from one view. "Our type is only a one-side emission so the other people cannot see the display," Onitsuka said. Although the technique wasn explained, the one-sided illumination is reportedly achieved by locking the light output to just the direction of the text.

The transparent screens on display were in a smartphone form factor sporting a 320 x 240 resolution. Onitsuka said that they can be manufactured up to 4-inches.
