Partnership promises to deliver new levels of SSL performance and together accelerate market acceptance.

Samsung LED Co Ltd, established last April, and lighting stalwart Acuity Brands have announced plans to collaborate on solid-state lighting (SSL) products. The pair claim their partnership will accelerate the adoption of LED lighting technologies in the marketplace.

Acuity Brands is the parent company of Acuity Brands Lighting among many other subsidiaries. Among the leaders in the lighting fixture segment, Acuity Brands Lighting offers a variety of indoor and outdoor lighting products as well as lighting-control and sensor products. "The opportunity for highly energy-efficient lighting solutions utilizing LEDs and lighting controls continues to expand due to demand for sustainable solutions, the growing need to reduce energy and maintenance costs, and regulatory drivers requiring the use of more efficient lighting and controls solutions," said Vernon J. Nagel, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer.

Samsung and Acuity have pledged to establish a new standard for performance in SSL products and leverage the energy efficiency angle for success. Nagel said, "Our collaboration with Samsung LED underscores our commitment to sustainable lighting solutions that deliver the benefits of solid-state technology with a focus on lighting quality for a superior visual environment."

Samsung LED is a relative newcomer to the LED space. The company is a joint venture of Samsung Electronics and Samsung Electro-Mechanics. The company has boldly stated that it will produce the worlds best LED. The company also has a stated intention to run a green business.

Samsung LED made immediate inroads in the market for Display BLU (LED backlight unit) products that leverages corporate synergies with its consumer electronics TV business. Although the led operation is relatively young, its based on more than ten years of technology and manufacturing development.

About the partnership, Jea Wook Kim, President and CEO of Samsung LED, said, "Samsung LED is excited to collaborate with Acuity Brands to lead the transformation from analog to digital lighting. With this transformation, the convergence of new products and solutions through LED innovation becomes possible. LED technology will bring ever increasing value not only through lighting but additional features and benefits only made possible by intelligent digital devices."
