Samsung and LG go toe-to-toe and announce new flexible OLED smartwatches on same day.

South Korean electronics giants Samsung and LG have unveiled new smartwatches on the same day. The Samsung smartwatch offers 3G connectivity that allows users to make and receive phone calls without a smartphone.

The Samsung Gear S offers mobile data without the need for a smartphone connected via Bluetooth, as the company`s existing smartwatches currently require.

This allows notifications from social networks like Facebook and Twitter, calendars and applications, even when you are nowhere near your phone. You can also receive SMS and easily send replies using the onscreen keyboard or voice recognition software.

It also means that you can make and receive calls directly from your wrist, as well as getting calls forwarded from your smartphone.

The watch has a curved two-inch Super AMOLED display, manufactured using the same techniques which provide the clear, bright displays on the company’s latest tablets.

The Gear S will be available worldwide from early October, with a gradual launch in different markets.

The LG watch is a circular Android Wear smartwatch that use a 1.3" 320x320 (348 PPI) plastic (flexible) OLED panel. Other features include a 1.2 Ghz Snapdragon 400 CPU, 512MB of RAM and 4GB of storage. It has a 410 mAh battery which should last about a single day.

It`s compatible with apps available in the Google Play Store and can receive notifications for incoming and missed calls, upcoming meetings, events and local weather forecasts.

The LG watch is expected to launch in the 4^th quarter of 2014.
