‘Display innovative process platform project’ that will invest $444 million (528.1 billion KRW) for the next seven years to secure next-generation display technologies that are far superior than the ones from other countries is set to be carried out on full-scale starting from next year. South Korean Government’s will to solidify its position as the global display leader by securing and developing innovative display technologies is stronger than ever.
Korea Evaluation Institute of Industrial Technology (KEIT) announced 32 new potential projects related to the project and it has received opinions from the industry. It is going to come up with about 20 projects and start working on them starting from March of April of next year.
Because China is gaining dominance within the market and is quickly improving its technical skills, the project is particularly drawing lots of attentions. There is a growing level of desperations about securing technologies that are far superior than others and promoting relevant industries based on the project as South Korean Government has organized the project as a large-scale project while it had been reducing its budget for national display projects every year.
12 projects have been carried out since July of this year which is the first year of the project. KEIT has come up with 32 new potential projects for next year and it is planning to perform 20 projects out of 32 projects after gathering opinions from the industry.

Size of the budget for the project in 2020 is expected to be about the size planned by Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) initially. This year’s budget is about $5.89 million (7 billion KRW) while next year’s budget is estimated to be about $75.7 million (90 billion KRW). Because South Korean Government has shown a strong will to promote South Korea’s display and semiconductor industries, next year’s budget is expected to be about the size requested by MOTIE without any reduction.
The project can be basically divided into development of innovative materials and equipment that can cover vacuum and nonvacuum processes, development of next-generation displays such as stretchable display, and development of convergent and multi-displays such as micro-display. South Korean Government is also going to construct a testbed in Chungnam so that next-generation technologies that are being developed by small to midsize companies can be tested on a production line.
First, development of PSF organic light emitting material to secure high efficiency blue OLED is included as a potential project for next year. The development involves an innovative technology that can materialize long-lived OLED while having strengths of a high efficiency phosphorescent material and a fluorescent material with high color purity.
KEIT is also going to push for development of inkjet equipment that can print OLED with a resolution of at least 300ppi and large substrates based on the fact that the market is currently formed with foreign products at the center.
KEIT is also planning on a project that involve development of haptic actuator with vibratory acceleration of at least 2G that allows a driver to feel different feelings that are different from vibration from a car without having to see a car display. Development of 5G+ display-integrated antenna for next-generation mobile displays is also included as a potential project.
