DisplaySearch Announces Strong Results for OLED Displays in Q3'06: Q/Q Shipments Up 33%, and Revenues Up 20%; Samsung SDI Moves Up From #2 in Units and Revenue to #1
AUSTIN, TEXAS, November 28, 2006 ?DisplaySearch, the worldwide leader in display market research and consulting revealed in its latest Quarterly OLED Shipment and Forecast Report that OLED shipments grew to 21.2 million and revenues hit $132.5 million in Q3'06. Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLED) displays compete with LCDs in small/medium applications such as mobile phone main displays and sub-displays, MP3s and automotive consoles. OLED shipments increased 33% Q/Q due to a 57% increase in sub-displays and a 46% growth in mobile phone main displays. PMOLEDs continue to dominate the market with a revenue share of over 98%. There are now thirteen small molecule and two P-OLED producers with small molecule having a 99% revenue share.
Samsung SDI regained the #1 position in units and revenue in Q3'06 with 5.1M displays and $32.6M in revenue. LGE was #2 in revenue and #3 in shipments, while RiTdisplay was #3 in revenue and #2 in shipments. Pioneer was #4 and Univision was #5 in units and revenue, as shown in Table 1:

Sub-displays and MP3 player displays continued to account for ~90% of shipments at 12.5M and 6.9M, respectively. Of the remaining applications, main displays and industrial applications showed strong growth, but volume remained low as shown in Table 2:

In other news included in the report,
- AUO (Taiwan) stopped producing AMOLEDs and shipped their remaining inventory
- Teco (Taiwan) will be moving their fab from Taiwan to China, but has restarted its Taiwan fab, and is shipping MP3 displays to iRiver.
- Opto Tech (Taiwan) stopped production and announced that the company is exiting the business.
- Samsung SDI (Korea) moved their initial production dates for AMOLEDs from Q4?6 to Q1?7. LG.Philips LCD (Korea) also announced plans to begin AMOLED production in 2007.
- Interest in OLEDs for diffuse lighting continued to grow, with announcements by GE Plastics (USA), OSRAM (Germany), Philips (Holland), Matsushita (Japan) Merck (Germany) and the Republic of China all indicating strong activity in the development stage.
