LCD Shipments Up 135%

LCD continues to gain ground as the consumer television of choice, as LCD TV unit shipments in Q2 skyrocketed 135 percent year-over-year and 28 percent from Q1 to a record 9.4 million units, according to DisplaySearch.

That represents 22 percent of the worldwide TV market, up from 17 percent in Q1, the market research firm noted.

North America saw strong LCD TV unit shipment results -- up 48 percent -- as lower LCD TV prices, higher CRT TV prices due to the digital tuner mandate and increased retailer emphasis on LCD TVs boosted LCD TV unit penetration to a record high 34 percent.

Despite high expectations from the World Cup, DisplaySearch said, Europes share declined from 45 percent in Q1 to 41 percent in Q2 due to an excessive Q1 sell-in.

On a revenue basis worldwide, LCD TVs rose quickly due to gains by larger sizes and higher resolutions, the firm said. LCD TV revenues jumped 29 percent quarter-over-quarter and 138 percent year-over-year to a record high $11.3 billion and 47 percent of the global TV market, up from 41 percent in Q1.
